A few local tips

So you’re wondering how to get the best out of Brisbane’s food scene? First, don’t just stick to the obvious places around the CBD or South Bank. I’d suggest hopping on a city cat ferry to New Farm and wandering around Brunswick Street for some fantastic casual bites and coffee.

If you’re here during winter, cozy up in Paddington’s cafes like Miss Jones or The Baker’s Duck for hearty brunch plates that’ll keep you warm. For dinner, ask locals where the best latest openings are, restaurants here pop up fast and often have their own loyal followings before anyone else catches on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about eating out in Brisbane? I’ve got answers.

If you want a real buzz with heaps of restaurant options, try South Bank or Fortitude Valley. South Bank has everything from riverfront dining to vibrant night markets, while Valley is where you find funky bars alongside some killer Asian fusion spots.
Absolutely. You’ll want places that feel relaxed but still serve good food. I’ve taken kids to places like The Charming Squire at XXXX Brewery – large spaces and a friendly vibe. The kid’s menu isn’t just nuggets either, which is a bonus.
Brisbane actually does veg(etari)an pretty well nowadays. Check out places like Greenslopes’ Vegerama or Nectar for tasty plant-based meals that even meat-eaters I know enjoy. And West End is full of casual vegan cafes if you want something quick.
Weekdays, especially lunch mid-week, are quieter. Evenings on Sunday or Monday nights tend to be easier to book. But for some hotspots like Julius Pizzeria or Esquire, booking ahead is your safest bet any day.
Head to areas near the river, like Eagle Street Pier or Hamilton. Oriel Grill is one of my favourite spots for fresh prawns and Moreton Bay bugs. Also, don’t miss the seafood stalls at Eat Street Markets, they’re fresh and super tasty, especially during summer.
