Caxton Street / Paddington Barracks
In the east end of Paddington...
Caxton Street is famous for its food, drink, and general bonhomie. It's where trams used to trundle between the city and the suburbs and has always been a hub for local business and entertainment. The Suncorp Stadium is located at the top of Caxton Street, and during the famously competitive "State of Origin" rugby league series, thousands of Queensland Maroons fans line the road to cheer their team and boo the opposition, as they make their way to the stadium.
It's a great place to go on a pub crawl...
Just start at the stadium and work your way towards The Barracks at the eastern end. In between, you'll find wine bars, cocktail bars, tapas restaurants, plenty of pavement cafes, intimate lounges and some interesting shops. The Barracks itself sits on the site of the original Brisbane Gaol, later the Police Barracks (the Victoria Army Barracks Museum is just up the road).
After lying derelict for two decades...
The Barracks was redeveloped and now houses a large retail complex of bars, restaurants, shops, an arthouse cinema and even a medical centre, and has fast become a popular evening entertainment destination. It's proximity to the transport hub of Roma Street, and the closeness of the CBD itself, makes this area quite happening, and highlights to savour include the heritage Caxton Street Hotel and the Caxton Street Seafood And Wine Festival.
