Bulimba & Hawthorne

If you go east...
Of the CBD, hop over the New Farm/Teneriffe peninsula and over to the other side of the river, you'll hit Bulimba; a middle-class residential area and home to army cadet units and some aviation barracks.
Bulimba life...
centres around Oxford Street, which runs west to east from the river, where you'll find plenty of spacious and contemporary low-level apartment blocks, small businesses, and an ever-thriving bar and cafe scene, with an 'urban village' feel about it. Oxford Street also has a cinema, and is situated close to two pretty parks; the Bulimba Memorial Park right on the doorstep, and Vic Lucas Park, right at the northern tip, on the river. The streets off and around Oxford Road are leafy and wide, with detached houses and little overcrowding, so it's popular with families although, to many Brisbanites, property here is considered overpriced.
At the southern end...
Of Bulimba, is Hawthorne, famous for its classic 1940s movie theatre which houses a huge curved screen, and also two smaller ones. More large houses and perfectly manicured lawns line the streets here, as well as numerous small parks and green spaces and, like Bulimba, it has a City Cat ferry stop, making the 4km journey to the CBD fast and frequent. There are several self-catering rentals to be had in this area so, if you can afford it, it's a great place to immerse yourself in suburban Brisbane life.
